On July 24, 2022, Mildred Gertrude Crutchfield's soul returned to God. She was 96 years old and was at peace.
She is survived by her daughter Belinda Davis (Don) of Baird; two granddaughters, Valeska Schrader (Dan), Marley Rabah (Maxwell) and their two children Avery and Braeden; son-in-law Robert Russo; two grandsons, Anthony and Nate (Paola) and their sons, Lucas and Nathan; step-daughter Dolores McNett (Jack); and her faithful niece, Jo Ann Allen of Baird.
Those grandchildren were the light of Mildred’s life. All of them were good to come visit their Mammaw…a gift that Mildred truly treasured. During Covid 19 lock downs, they would gather outside her windows to visit. Millie happily lived the last seven years of her life at Silver Springs Rehab in Abilene.
Mildred married George Crutchfield in April 1944 near her home in Chatanooga, Tennessee. In 1945, after his service in WWII, they returned to his home in Baird, where he operated his family’s full service gas station and they had two daughters. In 1951, George reenlisted in the US Air Force. Mildred was a devoted military wife and was proud to “serve”. She volunteered on every duty station…home room mother…PTA…bus chaperon on many field trips and to countless football games, NCO Wives Club and Protestant Chapel, and on to her most challenging and rewarding position in Family Services at Tachikawa AFB Japan. During her military travels she made many friends that she stayed in contact with. In 1974, George and Mildred retired to Baird and moved into the home he was born in. They renovated the house into a fine place to live and enjoyed entertaining family and friends from all over the state and country there. Mildred worked for Thompson’s Variety Store and was the Activity Director at Homestead Nursing in the 70’s.
George preceded her in death in 1979 and her daughter, Susan Diane, passed away this year in April. Mildred was a faith-filled Christian and attended the First United Methodist Church of Baird.
Visitation will be 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM Thursday, July 28, 2022, at Parker-Jacobs Funeral Home, 141 E. 3rd Street in Baird. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 PM in the Parker-Jacobs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Ross Cemetery.
A special thank you goes to Alpha and Omega Hospice Care, who made these last few months more bearable. The family encourages memorial gifts be made to the Baird Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 1013, Baird, Texas 79504.
