Greg Songer Obituary

Gregory Clay Songer, 62, went home to be with Jesus, unexpectedly on March 2, 2020.  He was born February 23, 1958, in Santa Monica, California, to John "Bud" Songer and Margaret Louise Jenkins-Songer.

Greg went to school in Eugene, Oregon before his parents moved him to Lubbock in 1974 at the age of 17. Greg worked at Shakeys Pizza Parlor before going to school as a mechanic.  After leaving school, he worked as an apprentice at Modern Chevrolet as a front end mechanic for a time before training to be an EMT. In 1980, he worked for Santa Fe Railroad, as a Trackman, setting railroad ties with a 16 lb sledgehammer for about a year. In 1981, while building pumps for Pioneer Pump Company, he and a bunch of work buddies wandered into a small restaurant called Lubbock's Big Apple, where he met his future bride, Melanie Jacobs, while she was waiting tables.  Greg and Melanie married July 10, 1982, and moved to Stanton, Texas, where Greg worked in Midland for IBM repairing typewriters.  The couple moved back to Lubbock in 1984, where Greg worked repairing copiers with Pitney Bowes.  In 1986, Greg received his GED and then went to South Plains College to become a Respiratory Therapist.  He graduated in 1988 and worked as a Certified Respiratory Therapist until he retired in 2008.

Greg loved working with wood, enjoyed gaming on his PS4 with a Christian clan.  He was a part of the Society for Creative  Anachronism (a medieval recreation group) as a Squire to Duke Inman McMoore.  Greg earned the rank of Honorable Lord Gregory Clayborne. He loved dogs and other animals and had a heart for the elderly.  He posted daily verses in his gaming clan, spreading the word of God. He was a man with a huge heart full of love.

Greg is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Brad Mandeville and Gary Grantham.

Survivors include his wife Melanie Songer; his four-legged child Brandy; two brothers, Camron Mandeville and wife Lynn of Washington, Randy Songer and wife Cindy of Houston; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, March 7, 2020, at the Combest Funeral Home Chapel, 2210 Broadway, with Shaun Brewer officiating. Services are under the direction of Parker-Jacobs Funeral Home of Baird.  The family asks, if possible, that you wear bright spring colors to the service.
