George Edward Black, Jr., 87, passed away in Abilene, Texas on April 24, 2023, after awell-lived, long life.
George was born in San Antonio, Texas on July 11, 1935. His parents were George Edward Black, Sr. and Minnie Martha Edwards Black Bounds. He was raised by his father and step-mother, Ora Clyde Lindberg Black Beyer. His father died when George was 16 years old. George had three siblings: Barbara Willene Black Farr (deceased), Lequita Joy Black Breu McDonald, and Clyde Obron Black, who died as an infant. He married Carol Ann Nance Black in 1954 and they had four children.
George was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Brenda Lee Black and two of his children, Cheryl Denise Roach and Marion Steven Black. George is survived by his daughter, Carolyn Diane Newton (Larry) and George Edward Black, III (Sue). George also had three step-children, sixteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
George spent most of his adult life in the Abilene and surrounding area, living in Strawn, Gordon and Clyde for short periods of time before settling in Abilene in the late 1960s. He was a fourth generation master carpenter and could build anything. He was always working on a remodeling project and was very generous with his time and talents. He coached Little League Baseball, different softball teams and was a Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers fan. He served in the National Guard from 1952-1954, before he even graduated from high school. He retired from the Abilene Fire Department after 23 years, and then retired again from Hendrick Medical Center Facilities Management after 19 years. He attended Minter Lane Church of Christ with his son, Eddie and daughter-in-law, Sue.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, May 6, 2023 at Minter Lane Church of Christ, 2502 Minter Lane in Abilene.
